Hollister – Senior Melissa Garcia was honored as San Andreas High School’s student of the month for May. Garcia was recognized for her active involvement on the school’s prom committee and the extra effort she has put into her education.
Garcia, 17, said she was surprised to hear she had received the honor, but it made her feel motivated to know the school had taken note of her achievement. She has devoted a great deal of her spare time to doing extra work and taking independent study classes so she can graduate in June. Garcia has been studying for the math exit exam, which she has been working hard to pass.
“You just have to keep trying. I get closer and closer, but it feels good to know I’m (being honored),” Garcia said.
Her hard work has not gone unnoticed. Besides earning her the recognition of her school as student of the month, Garcia’s family has noticed an improvement in her work as well.
“I am so proud of my daughter; she has come such a long way. She really strives to achieve,” said Juliana Benitez, Garcia’s mother.
While she was busy studying for the state exit exam, Garcia also helped plan the San Andreas prom. As committee co-chair, she and her classmates planned the event, which took place on May 4.
