SAN JUAN BAUTISTA
The minor division Angels remain alive in the District 39 Tournament of Champions, and will play Live Oak Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. in San Juan Bautista, which is hosting the tournament.
Although it suffered its first loss of the tournament on Saturday when it fell by a 12-3 margin to a tough Scotts Valley squad, the Angels’ triumphant victory over San Lorenzo Valley last Thursday hopefully provided the San Juan-Aromas representative with enough of a boost for the remainder of the tournament.
In that game, the Angels trailed 9-0 after two complete innings, only to come roaring back and steal a 12-9 win.
“I knew the first game against San Lorenzo Valley would be tight, and I knew our second game against Scotts Valley would be tough,” Angels manager David Fajnor said.
“I like our chances against Live Oak.”
The Angels are now 1-1 at the TOC, 17-3-1 overall for the season.
In order to reach the TOC final, scheduled for Saturday at 10 a.m., and, if necessary, Sunday at 1 p.m., the Angels will need to rifle off three straight wins, beginning Tuesday night against Live Oak.
“It will test our pitching,” Fajnor said.
Representing one of the smallest leagues in District 39, San Juan-Aromas consists of approximately 120 Little League baseball players. Other leagues in D-39 include Santa Cruz American, Santa Cruz National, Gilroy American, Gilroy National, Aptos, Pajaro Valley, San Lorenzo Valley, Watsonville American, Live Oak and Capitola-Soquel.
The San Juan-Aromas major division Reds, meanwhile, have been eliminated from its D-39 TOC bracket.
The Reds, after opening the tournament with a 10-3 victory over Santa Cruz National, lost twice in the double-elimination tournament – 5-1 to Pajaro Valley and 5-4 to Santa Cruz American.
