Investigators with the California Highway Patrol are still trying to determine what caused the 7:15 p.m. crash in the westbound lane of Union Road.

The accident was originally reported to emergency personnel as a car striking a bicyclist. However, when firefighters and paramedics arrived on the scene, it was determined that the motorcycle was the only vehicle involved in the crash, the CHP said.

Although the details are still sketchy, crash investigators said the accident happened when the motorcyclist was westbound on Union on a yellow and black Harley-Davidson motorcycle when, for an unknown reason, the motorcycle went into a skid and then turned on its side.

The driver fell off and the motorcycle continued skidding for another 15 or 20 feet until it stopped, straddling the center line, the CHP said.

The CHP and San Benito County Sheriff’s Department shut down a quarter mile section of Union Road to give paramedics and emergency crews enough room to work on the injured man and a large enough site for Cal-Star to land its helicopter in the middle of the road.
