Dear Editor:

Kudos to Joe Morris for organizing what appears to be a successful team-building workshop.

I admit that my own letters to the press have been reactive to what I perceived to be trickery, duplicity, deception and poor logic displayed by the “On Any Given Tuesday” promoters and some on the Board of Supervisors who enacted the measure into law. Still, the “On Any Given Tuesday” growth-control initiative must be defeated in the polls next March before genuine progress is born out of compromise.

San Benito County needs new vision and leadership. Scagliotti, Cruz and Kesler may have done their collective best as supervisors, but it is time for them to step down and open new doors to progress without the encumbrance of the past prejudices of this administration.

At long last, the City of Hollister appears to be making real progress with its new administration under Dale Shaddox. Unfortunately, we are just beginning to understand how poorly the city was managed under the previous administration.

The strength of the “…Tuesday” growth-control initiative is based on the past mistakes of ex-City Manager George Lewis and Utility Manager Jim Perrine; uncontrolled growth, inadequate infrastructure management and poor planning.

The future of San Benito County will be best served by adopting a strong centrist agenda that serves the interests of all citizens, the local economy and the environment.

The following statement is from the Silicon Valley Environmental Partnership Web site and I think it makes perfect sense. This group is a coalition of government agencies, world-class businesses and community stakeholders working together toward mutually beneficial goals in the Silicon Valley area.

Part of their Mission Statement is: “The concept of sustainability teaches us that a healthy natural environment must co-exist with a well-designed economy.”

Hopefully, new leadership in San Benito County will be able to embrace positive and progressive change for the majority of citizens in San Benito County. But until then, support local ranchers and farmers by voting NO on the “On Any Given Tuesday” initiative next March.

Mike Smith,

Hollister
