Political newcomer Sergio Montanez has submitted paperwork declaring his intention to run for the open District 2 seat on the Hollister City Council, according to City Clerk Geri Johnson.

The clerk’s office Friday received the Form 501, a candidate intention statement, in the mail from Montanez. It is for the District 2 seat, representing the city’s west side, held by Councilwoman Eugenia Sanchez. He still must submit at least 20 valid signatures from registered voters in his district, along with other paperwork.

Sanchez at a recent council meeting announced she would not run for a second term. She had defeated former Councilman Robert Scattini in 2006.

Sanchez, a full-time Gilroy teacher, had aspirations last year to run for the 28th District State Assembly seat being vacated by Anna Caballero. She later pulled back on her candidacy, before announcing last month she would focus her attention on enhancing her career and decline to seek a second term in public office.

So far, Montanez is the only District 2 resident to officially declare intentions to run. Scattini, the marshal and former District 2 councilman, has publicly stated he plans to seek another run for the seat.

The other open seat is District 3, held by Councilwoman Pauline Valdivia, who is running for a fourth term. Nobody else has submitted candidacy paperwork to this point.

Interested residents have until 5 p.m. Friday to submit the appropriate paperwork and signatures to the clerk’s office at Hollister City Hall, 375 Fifth St. If Sanchez does not run, that deadline in District 2 would extend until Aug. 11.

Montanez could not be reached immediately before publication.
