‘Save the Redwoods’ photo contest
SAN FRANCISCO
– Save the Redwoods League, a nonprofit dedicated to protecting
redwood forests, will be hosting a free statewide photo contest.
The

Walk Among Giants

contest encourages California residents to capture every angle
of the redwood forest, from the smallest critters inhabiting the
forest floor to the grandeur of the tree canopy.

The proposed elimination for public funding for California State
Parks could close 60 of 61 parks that are home to redwoods,
severely limiting opportunities for people to visit and experience
awe-inspiring redwood forests,

said Jennifer Benito, an outreach director for Save the
Redwoods, in a press release.
To submit photos, visit savetheredwoods.org/contest. All photo
submissions and completed contest forms are due July 23 at 5 p.m.
Winners will be notified by flickr.com Ids.
First prize includes a one-night stay in a cabin and a half-day
guided eco-tour of the Redwood Naitonal Park. The photo will be
featured in Redwood League publications and online. Second prize is
a one-night stay at the historic Requa Inn in Redwood National
Park. Third prize is two redwood seedlings planted in honor of the
winner.
Night work starts on 25

HOLLISTER – Night work began on Hwy. 25 on June 14 and will continue through July 1 between the hours of 8 p.m. and 5 a.m. Drivers can expect delays as construction begins in a safety improvement project that will widen the road and install a median between the two lanes between Hudner Lane and the Santa Clara County line. In addition, several private driveways will be closed and consolidated into one entry point to decrease the number of access points along the highway. It will lower the incidence of slow-moving vehicles affecting the flow of traffic.

Nighttime construction work includes removing shoulder and median rumble strips and re-striping the roadway. The entire project is expected to be completed in 10 months. Some construction will require lane closures and travel delays. Temporary speed limit signs have been placed along the route to encourage drivers to take precautions in the construction zone and to drive at 45 mph, 10 mph lower than the regular limit.

Report out-of-state plates

SACRAMENTO – The California Highway Patrol is enlisting the help of residents for a program to fight out-of-state registration. They have dubbed the program CHEATERS for Californians Help Elimate All the Evasive Registration Scofflaws.

Since 2004, the program has returned $4 million to the state of California.

“Every year, the state loses millions of dollars in revenue from California residents who unlawfully register their vehicles in other states or countries,” said Joe Farrow, the CHP commissioner, in a press release. “With the help of the public, and our investigators, we’re able to return much needed funding to the state to help maintain our infrastructure.”

Residents can report out-of-state license plates anonymously online at www.chp.ca.gov, and should include the state of plate, the license plate number, date and time observed, where it was observed, make, model and color of the vehicle, and any details about it.

The information is put into a database, and if there is proof that the owners reside in California, a letter will be sent requesting that the owner comply with in-state registration.

“These violators are in California using our services, but not paying their fare share of the costs,” Farrow said. “It’s time for vehicle registration cheaters to end their free ride, and pay their fare share.”
