Gabriel Espinoza and Xavier Beltran, 2009 SBHS graduates, were the first students to receive the scholarship. Espinoza is studying at Arizona State University and Beltran is studying at California State University, Fresno.

Town Hall meeting on underage drinking

HOLLISTER – The San Benito County Behavioral Health Substance Abuse Services, in collaboration with the Federal Interagency Coordinating Committee on the Prevention of Underage Drinking, is sponsoring a town hall meeting May 24, at 6:30 p.m., at the Veterans Memorial Building to discuss and raise awareness about the issue of underage drinking.

Parents, teachers, officials, youth, and other community members will be educated about the impact that underage drinking has on the community, and they will develop possible ways to address this issue.

Among eighth graders, about 1 in 20 (5.4 percent) reported being drunk at least once in the past month. Nearly 1 out of every 7 10th graders (14.4 percent) and about 2 out of every 7 12th graders (27.6 percent) reported being drunk at least once in the last month.

By attending the Town Hall, participants will gain a necessary understanding of acute alcohol poisoning; identify myths about underage and binge drinking; speak with youth and local community members about the issue and parents will be able to sign a committed pledge to “refuse to purchase, provide, or serve alcohol to a minor and refuse to allow any underage drinking in their home.”

Garden opens at Early Childhood Education Center

HOLLISTER – The San Benito Farm Bureau will be hosting a ribbon cutting ceremony for a garden at the Early Childhood Education Center May 27 at 5:30 p.m., 1011 Line St., Room 9. The garden is meant to nurture students’ minds and bodies. It was planted by some of the students at the Early Childhood Education Center. The garden is part of the Ag in the Classroom program.

AMBAG hosts PG&E Energy Watch lecture

SANTA CRUZ – The Association of Monterey Bay Area Governments will be hosting a program on Integrating Energy Efficiency and Renewables in Home Retrofits that is open to building professionals. The event is June 11, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m at the Santa Cruz Police Department Community Room, 155 Center Street. The instructor, Bill Hollway, is a performance consultant at PG&E’s energy training center in Stockton. The program will look at the most effective ways to lower energy use and greenhouse gasses by going beyond a specific-technology focus and taking a whole-system approach to buildings. The instructor will detail the whole-building perspective, beginning with the science of building performance, which studies how all energy systems in a building work together. He will also discuss key energy efficiency measures, how to assess potential in a home and what their implementation would do to reduce the size of proposed renewable energy systems, as well as cost scenarios and ROI calculations. The class is a prerequisite to take the follow-up class on commercial buildings.

Summer Fun Program accepts registration

HOLLISTER – The Sí, Se Puede! Learning Center of La Villa Luna Apartments, 850 Hillcrest Road, is now accepting applications for their upcoming Summer Fun Program. The program runs June 14-Aug. 6 and is open to students in kindergarten through fifth grade. Students may choose between a morning session (9 a.m.-12:30 p.m.) and an afternoon session (1:30 p.m.-5 p.m.) for $10 per week for the first child and $5 for every additional child. Activities include reading, writing, technology, science and cooking. There will also be weekly field trips or special events.

Work permits available

HOLLISTER – Students between the ages of 12 and 18 years of age who plan to work during the summer must have a “Permit to Employ and Work” on file with the employer during the term of employment. Students can apply for a work permit at their school attendance office, where authorized personnel are available to approve the applications and process the paperwork. Applications for work permits for students attending rural schools may be obtained from the school principal.

Students under 14 years of age are only allowed to work in agriculture-related businesses or the entertainment field. Students are urged to process their applications before school recesses for the summer.

Students not attending a public high school should direct their inquiries about work permits to the San Benito County Office of Education, 460 Fifth St., in Hollister. Employers who employ students without work permits on file, face potential fines of $500 per minor.

Navy and Marine reunion

FORT WAYNE, IN. – The USS Columbus Veterans Association is looking for Navy and Marine Corps shipmates who served on the USS Columbus CA-74/CG-12 from 1944 through 1976 or the USS Columbus (SSN-762) past and present who would like to share memories with old friends. Saddle Horse Parade applications available

HOLLISTER – Applications for participation in the 2010 Saddle Horse Show Parade in downtown Hollister are now available. Stage Company and Historical Society pair up for fundraiser

HOLLISTER – The San Benito Stage Company and the San Benito County Historical Society will be hosting a fundraiser in which they will “arrest” local citizens who will have to raise money to post bail. The money raised will help with the July production of “Oklahoma,” as well as Historical Society projects. The arrests will take place May 22 or 23, or at the farmers market May 26.

Team Baler launches monthly fundraisers

HOLLISTER – In an effort to raise $100,000 to avoid cutbacks to athletic programs at San Benito High School, team Baler will be hosting a monthly tri-tip barbecue on the second Wednesday of every month. Partners for the fundraiser include Progresso’s Tamale Parlor and Hollister Drive in Market. The first event will be Saturday, May 22, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Manta Rays open to new members

HOLLISTER – The Manta Rays are a nonprofit, competitive swim team for those who desire to be the best possible swimmers. The team goal is to send swimmers to Stanford to compete at the highest level. The definition of fun for the team is winning and having the swimmers reach their full potential. They keep the team numbers low so the coaches can concentrate on quality.

The team has room for five more swimmers who would like to accomplish something substantial in the sport of swimming and are willing to work for it.

Kids Rule camp starts registration

HOLLISTER – The San Benito Stage Company Children’s Summer Theatre Camp, Kids Rule, is open for registration. The camp is June 21-25, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. It is open to boys and girls ages 6 to 13. The week includes workshops in ensemble music, dance movements, acting, improv, pantomime, small group vocals and more.

One-Stop hosts employer roundtable

HOLLISTER – The San Benito County One-Stop Career Center will host an Employer Roundtable for small business professionals May 26, from 8 a.m. to 9:30 a.m., at Paine’s Restaurant.

Topics will include how the One-Stop Career Center can save employers money by helping them find qualified candidates as well meeting employment and training needs. Breakfast will be served.

Guest speakers include Nancy Martin, president and CEO of the Economic Development Corporation; Janice Shriver, a labor market consultant with EDD Labor Market Information; Jessica French, president and CEO of the San Benito County Chamber of Commerce; and Brenda Weatherly, the executive director of the Hollister Downtown Association.

Blue Star Moms collect donations

HOLLISTER – May is Military Appreciation month and it is a time when the South Bay Blue Star Moms collect donations for care packages to be sent to deployed service personnel. Packages will be sent on June 5 and donation barrels are available around town. Some of them can be found at Tranquility Day Spa and Salon, the Oasis Gym, the San Benito County Free Library and San Benito High School. The barrels will be in place through May 21.

Items that are needed include beef jerky, tuna in foil pouches, snack bars, individually-packaged powdered drink mixes, nuts and seeds, coated gum, sun block, chapstick, eye drops, baby and body wipes and boot insoles. Individual or travel size items are preferred.

Members will also be collection APO and FPO addresses of deployed personnel so that they may receive one of the care packages. Lists of names and addresses are not kept on file, but used solely for the upcoming care packaging event and then deleted.

Blood drive

Rabies vaccination clinic

HOLLISTER – San Benito County’s health and human services agency will be hosting a series of rabies vaccination clinics. The immunization is required for dogs and cats between four months to one year who should be revaccinated within 12 months. After that, the animals can receive the vaccine every three years. Dogs should be leashed at the event and cats should be in a cage or carrier.

The clinics will be held in the Animal Shelter Parking Lot, 1331 South St., in Hollister, from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Dates include June 2, June 16, July 14, and August 11. The fee is $6.

Red Barn run set for May

SAN JUAN BAUTISTA – The Red Barn Run is scheduled for May 23, at 10 a.m.at Windhaven Ranch in San Juan Bautista, to raise money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. The registration fee for the 5K is $38 and for the 10K is $43. Registration cost entitles entrants to a souvenir T-shirt, a barbecue lunch and a free beer for participants 21 and over. Live music will be provided by Generation Gap, formerly “The Local Groove,” and participants can receive a complimentary leg massage. Census offers over-the-phone option

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The deadline for returning census forms by mail has passed and starting in May, census enumerators will begin knocking on doors of non-responding households.

Individuals can call 1-866-872-6868 and their information will be taken over the phone. Spanish speakers can call 1-866-928-2010. Homes may still be visited by a census taker, but it will reduce the chance of a visit.

Pedal car display will be at Street Festival

HOLLISTER – The Hollister Downtown Association is preparing for the 24th Annual Street Festival and Car Show July 17, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. This year will feature a pedal car display. All makes and models are invited to be displayed during the show. The cost to register is $5. A People’s Choice Trophy will be awarded.

Local businesses, crafts people and nonprofit organizations are invited to participate with a sales, information or food booth. New this year will be an auto-related vendor row.

Senior Network Services seeks volunteers

HOLLISTER – The Senior Network Services Health Insurance Counseling & Advocacy Program (HICAP) is looking for volunteer counselors to assist Medicare beneficiaries in understanding their benefits through direct counseling. Auditions for El Teatro’s ‘Corridos’

HOLLISTER – Singers, performers and actors are needed to work with El Teatro Campesino for their next production of “Corridos!!! Tales of the Mexican Revolution,” directed by Kinan Valdez.

Singers must be able to sing in Spanish and must be familiar with Corridos, Rancheras and Mariachi styles. The director is also looking for actors who can convey a Zapata persona.

Sponsors needed for band fundraiser

HOLLISTER – The Rancho-Maze Band is hosting a golf tournament June 12 at Ridgemark and is looking for sponsors for the event. Red Cross seeks volunteers

HOLLISTER – The American Red Cross, Monterey Bay Area Chapter is looking for volunteers to staff the Hollister chapter office. The chapter office is located at 357 Fifth St., and the hours are Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Shifts are four hours, once a week, but any hours will be considered. The volunteer work offers an opportunity to give back to the community in a rewarding way.

Parkinson’s caregiver support group

HOLLISTER – Family or friends who are caring for a loved one with Parkinson’s or those suffering form the disease can join a monthly support group that provides information on Parkinson’s disease, current medications and research, how to deal with the loss of function, develop good self care skills, and what steps are necessary to plan for the future. Monthly speakers address these issues as well as other issues such as finding community resources like home care, adult day care, transportation and other needed services that could be available to you and your family member. Speakers- are provided each month from different organizations on a variety of topics related to Parkinson’s disease or care giving

The group meets the first Tuesday of every month at the First Presbyterian Church, 2066 Cienega Road, in Hollister, from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m.

HOLLISTER – GriefShare, a Christ-centered recovery and support group for those who are grieving a love one meets at Grace Bible Church, on the corner of Sixth and Monterey streets, Mondays at 7 p.m. The meetings include nationally recognized experts on grief and recovery topics. Seminar sessions include “God’s Prescription For Grief,” “The journey of Grief,” “The Effects of Grief” “When Your Spouse Dies” “Your Family and Grief” and “Stuck in Grief.”
