Auditions for El Teatro’s ‘Corridos’

HOLLISTER – Singers, performers and actors are needed to work with El Teatro Campesino for their next production of “Corridos!!! Tales of the Mexican Revolution,” directed by Kinan Valdez.

Singers must be able to sing in Spanish and must be familiar with Corridos, Rancheras and Mariachi styles. The director is also looking for actors who can convey a Zapata persona.

The show will be a celebration of the 100-year anniversary of the Mexican revolution. Performances are June 17-July 22. Anyone interested in auditioning can call Stephanie at 5261-4838 or e-mail [email protected] for an appointment.

Rabies vaccination clinic

HOLLISTER – San Benito County’s health and human services agency will be hosting a series of rabies vaccination clinics. The immunization is required for dogs and cats between four months to one year who should be revaccinated within 12 months. After that, the animals can receive the vaccine every three years. Dogs should be leashed at the event and cats should be in a cage or carrier.

The clinics will be held in the Animal Shelter Parking Lot, 1331 South St., in Hollister, from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Dates include May 19, June 2, June 16, July 14, and August 11. The fee is $6.

Events for Mental Health Month

HOLLISTER – San Benito Behavioral Health will host events at the Esperanza Center, 544 San Benito St., on May 19, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., in honor of Mental Health Month. The event is meant to bring together community support and to promote a positive view of mental health. It will include face painting, prizes, games and food.

National Animal Disaster Preparedness Day

HOLLISTER – The Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Citizen Corps has declared May 8 National Animal Disaster Preparedness Day.

The declaration is meant to raise awareness about the importance of planning for pets’ safety before disaster strikes.

Citizen Corps is asking veterinarians and kennels to provide pet owners with tips on creating emergency plans for their companion animals. Additionally, the corps recommends partnering with a local pet store to hold an event offering pet disaster kit shopping lists and giveaways, such as identification tags.

“Preparedness is peace of mind, and including our animals in preparedness plans before an emergency or disaster is the best way to ensure the safety of people and their pets,” said Heather Case, American Veterinary Medical Association Scientific Activities Division director, in a press release.

“Citizen Corps National Animal Disaster Preparedness Day is the perfect time for veterinarians to encourage their clients to develop appropriate animal evacuation plans and kits,” Case said.

The AVMA offers an array of disaster preparedness resources, including “Saving the Whole Family,” a client brochure on ways of providing for pets during an emergency. The brochure and other disaster planning resources are available in the Animal Health section of the AVMA’s Web site at www.avma.org.

Red Barn run set for May

SAN JUAN BAUTISTA – The Red Barn Run is scheduled for May 23, at 10 a.m. at Windhaven Ranch in San Juan Bautista, to raise money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. The registration fee for the 5K is $38 and for the 10K is $43. Fees will increase May 1. Registration cost entitles entrants to a souvenir T-shirt, a barbecue lunch and a free beer for participants 21 and over. Live music will be provided by The Local Groove, and participants can receive a complimentary leg massage. Awards will be given for first, second and third place in each division. ‘Oklahoma’ auditions

Census offers over-the-phone option

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The deadline for returning census forms by mail has passed and starting in May, census enumerators will begin knocking on doors of non-responding households.

Individuals can call 1-866-872-6868 and their information will be taken over the phone. Spanish speakers can call 1-866-928-2010. Homes may still be visited by a census taker, but it will reduce the chance of a visit.

Surrogate parents needed

HOLLISTER – The San Benito Office of Education and Special Education need volunteers to help with a surrogate parent program. Public School Districts train and appoint surrogate parents for a child with a disability under the following circumstances:

– The biological parent or adoptive parents cannot be identified or located after reasonable effort; or parental rights have been terminated

– The child does not have a court-appointed person authorized to make educational decisions

– The child’s court-appointed “parent” is unwilling or unable to serve as the surrogate parents

– The child is an unaccompanied homeless youth.

Surrogate parents play a unique and critical role in supporting the special education rights and needs of children.

Local library receives book collection

AROMAS – A branch library in Aromas was one of 22 central coast libraries to receive a book collection from the National Endowment for the Humanities. The gift is made possible by the “We the People” bookshelf program.

Each library will receive a set of 17 books along with posters, bookmarks and other materials from the NEH, which is working in partnership with the American Library Association.

“Since 2003, the ‘We the People’ bookshelf has introduced young readers at more than 17,000 school and public libraries to great literature and has helped them explore themes central to America’s history,” said Jim Leach, the NEH chairman. “Through the bookshelf, the Endowment provides high-quality educational resources to our nation’s libraries. This year readers at 4,000 libraries will be invited to explore the idea that the United States is a union, a ‘one’ as well as a ‘many.'”

The books provided this year are based on the theme “A More Perfect Union,” and are timed to coincide with the commemoration of the Civil War, which began 150 years ago. The books are targeted to children in kindergarten through high school.

Pedal car display will be at Street Festival

HOLLISTER – The Hollister Downtown Association is preparing for the 24th Annual Street Festival and Car Show July 17, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. This year will feature a pedal car display. All makes and models are invited to be displayed during the show. The cost to register is $5. A People’s Choice Trophy will be awarded.

Local businesses, crafts people and nonprofit organizations are invited to participate with a sales, information or food booth. New this year will be an auto-related vendor row.

New Kiwanis club forming

GILROY – A new Kiwanis club is organizing in Gilroy and applications are being accepted now. The club will focus on service projects addressing a variety of needs in the community

The Gilroy club will be part of Division 12 within the District of California-Nevada-Hawaii. The division includes Circle K for college students, Key Clubs and Key Leader for high school students, the Builders Club for middle school and junior high schools, K-Kids for elementary schools and AKtion Clubs for developmentally disabled adults.

Some key events the clubs participate in include the Special Games for disabled children who do not qualify for the Special Olympics; Turn-around scholarships of $1,000 that go to at-risk students to continue their education at a community college or trade school; turkey and food drives at the holidays and Kiwanis 1 Day, a day when club members gather to work on a specific project in their community.

Red Cross blood drive

HOLLISTER – An American Red Cross blood drive will be held May 20, from 1:30 to 6:30 p.m., at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

Grief and loss support groups

HOLLISTER – Central Coast VNA and Hospice is offering free grief and loss support groups in Hollister, Monterey, Salinas and Gilroy. Central Coast VNA and Hospice has been providing quality in home care, end of life care and community health services as well as support for those struggling with grief and loss. The support is provided by bereavement specialists, spiritual care counselors and licensed social workers. The Hollister group meets at the Hollister United Methodist Church, 521 Monterey St., from noon to 1:30 p.m., on the first and third Monday of every month.

WERC volunteers needed

MORGAN HILL – The Wildlife Education and Rehabilitation Center in Morgan Hill is accepting applications for volunteers who care about wildlife and who are available to work during the morning, one day a week. Duties include cleaning, feeding, and caring for injured, orphaned or sick native wildlife. All volunteers are required to be at least 16 years old. Volunteers at our site work a 3-4 hour shift and are asked to make a three-month commitment.
