Editor,

The sports article “Devastating Ending” (Free Lance sports March 1) prompted me to write this letter. The circumstances that led Coach Olejnik to make a decision of such magnitude are very clear and he should not take full responsibility for the turn of events. CCS officials such as Mr. Duane Morgan should also be held responsible. CCS officials had ample time to resolve the issued before it escalated to this degree. What made them drag their feet? Personal reasons? Was it too hard to give a response to questions and provide the necessary information to Coach Olejnik? These are questions that will never get an answer.

I do want to commend Coach Olejnik for stepping up and standing up for his principles, being an honest man with integrity and caring for the best interest of his wrestlers. I can tell you that he has been a role model to his team for not condoning the actions of others, like Mr. Morgan, who think they are working in the best interest of students by making exceptions to the rules and not following procedures because of personal interests. My son, Chris, learned a lot from Coach Olejnik. He learned that structure is the key to moving up, he also learned confidence and self esteem and I am sure that Coach O will be someone who Chris will look up to and know that he can count on in times of need.

I, as a parent, accept your apologies even though there is no need for you to apologize because your actions speak volumes about yourself by supporting your team. On the contrary, I want to thank you, your support team and your family, especially your wife, for the countless hours you have put in at the sacrifice of family time. I commend Chris for handling this situation in a mature way and walking with his head high. That is part of being a team and having good role models, such as a coach, who have taught you that even if you lose, you still go up to your opponent and shake hands and wish them luck.

In closing, I hope Mr. Morgan is able to sleep at night knowing that he has crushed someone’s dreams of getting to the top, especially one of his own.
