Officers arrest three in weekend checkpoint

HPD

The Hollister Police Department and the California Highway Patrol conducted a DUI/Driver license checkpoint Sept. 1, on San Felipe Road at Gateway Drive. The operation led to the arrest of two individuals for DUI, one warrant arrest and 22 citations.

More than 630 vehicles were screened during the checkpoint. The California Highway Patrol participated in the operation by having additional officers patrolling the surrounding areas of the checkpoint as well as other areas around the City of Hollister.

The joint effort by CHP and HPD resulted in two individuals being arrested for driving while under the influence and one additional person arrested for having an arrest warrant. The other drivers cited included 17 who were issued tickets for driving without a license and five others for miscellaneous traffic violations.

The Labor Day Holiday traditionally indicates an increase of people driving over the course of the weekend, according to the HPD, in a press release. A major component of

the checkpoints is to increase awareness of the dangers of impaired driving and to encourage the use of sober designated drivers. By publicizing these enforcement and education efforts, the Hollister Police Department and the California Highway Patrol said they believe motorists can be deterred from drinking and driving.

Funding for this DUI checkpoint was provided to the Hollister Police Department by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
