Just about the entire production staff from director John Tiffany, chorographer (they are calling it “Movement” for this production) by Steven Hoggett, scenic designer Bob Crowley and lighting designer Nataha Katz have moved with the entire production from Broadway to this venue.
This is not the usual hoopla Broadway production. We are doled out a story and song in a quiet but attention-getting manner unlike what we are used to in Broadway-type presentation.
The entire ensemble is musicians and actors who convey caring performances and are on stage for the entire show. Guitars, accordion, ukulele, banjo, cello, electric bass, violin and harmonica are incorporated in songs and unique movements meld into a unique blend of theatre that is something never seen before.
Stewart Ward—the discouraged, dejected songwriter singer—and Dani de Waal—the Czech immigrant with a hopeful, creative heart—bring heartfelt moments to their roles and touch the overall performance.
In 2007, “Once” originated from a fanciful, low budget indie Irish film written and directed by John Carney. It starred songwriters Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova, who won the Oscar for best song—“Falling Softly”—that year.
“Once” became an unexpected Broadway award-winning hit in 2012, with a book by Edna Walsh. Romantic recognition with Hansard and Irglova’s haunting songs and music such as “Leave,” “When Your Mind’s Made Up” and “Falling Slowly” make this a very special and diverse show.
