Our first Red Phone caller of the week, a local man, asked the Crimson Crusader to get something done about the overgrowth of weeds choking the center divider on San Felipe Road. Our caller said the weeds were not only unsightly, but also blocked the view of motorists.
The Crimson Crusader made a call to Hollister maintenance worker Benjie Casarez to see what could be done about the overgrowth. Casarez said city work crews would be out in force today cutting down the weeds. So, there you have it, dearest caller. As you drive by, watch your tax dollars at work.
Graffiti Removed
Our next Red Phone caller, a Hollister woman, called the Crimson Crusader to thank our hero for getting the graffiti cleaned up along the wall visible from the corner of Sunnyslope Road and Airline Highway in Hollister.
Actually, it wasn’t the Crimson Crusader who did that work. The graffiti was cleaned up before our hero had a chance to get out there. The real credit should go to City Code Enforcement Officer Mike Chambless and the property owners.
Restroom woes
Our final Red Phone caller, a local man visiting his daughter in Hollister, asked the Crimson Crusader why all of the city park restrooms are locked. The Crimson Crusader got Hollister Public Works Director Clay Lee on the phone and asked him.
Lee said after city budget cuts in March, the Parks Department locked the doors to the bathrooms at Vista Park, Calaveras School Park and Dunne Park. The bathrooms used to take six hours of staff time to clean, time the department needed badly after staff cuts, Lee said.
Red Phone on Hold
The Kentucky Fried Chicken sign on San Benito Street continues to vex Red Phone callers and the Crimson Crusader. Our hero received no fewer than six phone calls regarding the sign this week.
As previously reported, the Crimson Crusader and Hollister Code Enforcement Officer Mike Chambless are working on getting the sign taken down or at least painted over. However, after receiving such a large number of calls this week, the Crimson Crusader enlisted the help of Hollister Mayor Brad Pike. Mayor Pike pledged his help in beautifying the downtown area and getting the sign removed. This item remains on hold for 71 days and counting.
