At around 1:15 p.m. on Tuesday, a crack in a cast-iron, 12-inch water main caused flooding on San Benito Street near the intersection of Vine Street, Hollister Utilities Supervisor Henry Gonzales confirmed today. Part of the San Benito Street, meanwhile, remains blocked off as crews continue fixing the problem.
“We were able to isolate the problem,” Gonzales said. “It was an older line.”
He added that the crew working on the break worked all night and had service returned to the 25 affected households by 5 p.m. Tuesday.
The break was big enough to fill gutters halfway up the side of the road about a block from the break and send water north all the way until Haydon Street, where it was draining into the sewer on the east side of the road.
Gonzales said the procedure to fix this problem is to replace the broken segment of pipe and replace the valve and then seal it off with a sand and slurry mixture, which CalTrans requires. The mixture needs to cure for 48 hours, and Gonzales said he hopes to get paving completed on Monday and open the road between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m.
