We at the Red Phone are preparing for a full weekend of revelry with the Independence Rally in town, but anticipating at the same time a tip or two related to that event. Above all, we just want to encourage everyone to have a good time. Now, to some good news:

Road Nice

The Red Phone got a phone call this week that left us both pleased and baffled. The caller – we are sworn to secrecy, so even though the person left a name we cannot print it – told us of a traffic incident in which the caller admitted to cutting off a woman driver in traffic. We can say this much: The caller was in a blue car. The color of the car belong to the other driver was tan.

Here’s the wonderful part: the caller wanted to apologize!

“I just want to apologize in print,” said the caller. “I hope she reads it.”

We all know where that scenario too often leads: to dangerous road rage. But an apology? When was the last time? The Red Phone wants to give this caller a medal, erect a statue on the town square, anything to encourage such forthright behavior in others. Western civilization is leaning too close to anarchy not to applaud.

Just one problem: the phone number the caller gave us was wrong. We called it and got a very nice woman who sympathized with our predicament but could do nothing for us.

So we have a message for the caller: Call back. Please. Let us help you do the right thing and give you a full measure of credit in the process.

Firefighters Redux

Our recent item about Hollister firefighters all going to the store together regularly and using the truck drew an irked reply from a caller related to a city firefighter. The caller felt the firefighters were not getting their due, and wanted to make sure people understood that the money the firefighters are spending on these errands is their own. The caller took particular umbrage at rude comments from other patrons in the markets where the firefighters shop. “They never stick up for themselves,” said the caller, for fear of creating negative PR.

In our item, sources at the department told us that the main reason the firefighters all go to the market together is because they are short staffed and cannot be separated in case a call came in.

Anyone else want to weigh in on the pros and cons of firefighters running errands together in their trucks?

Clean up complete

We understand from the Marcello Orta of the city public works department that the weed problem previously reported along a fence at Calaveras School has been cleaned up. Orta is a stand-up guy, but we have not seen the fence in question ourselves, so if the original caller has other information, please call us again and let us know. Otherwise, we’ll cross this project off our to-do list.

Got a question, need an answer? Want to report a problem, or perhaps a good deed? We just want to help if we can. Call us at 635-9219.
