City Hall

The payroll calendar is offering Hollister employees a special bonus this coming fiscal year. That’s because it’s what they call a “leap year” in payroll circles due to there being 27 payrolls on the books in 2015-16 instead of the usual 26.
Like many organizations or companies, Hollister pays its workers on a bi-weekly basis. It will mean an extra paycheck for city employees in the fiscal year.
The extra leap year amount is budgeted at $335,000 for the 2015-16 fiscal year, according to projections discussed among council members at Thursday night’s budget hearing. The general fund budget for next fiscal year is projected at slightly over $18 million.
“It’s an anomaly that just builds up over the years,” said Brett Miller, director of administrative services for the city, in an interview with the Free Lance. “It’s one of those fluke things.”
Miller said some organizations get caught up by neglecting to budget for the extra payroll period and regret it later. He said when he first arrived to the city seven years ago, it was one of those payroll leap years, so he noted the next one on his bulletin board so he wouldn’t forget.
