– San Benito High School’s Varsity Winterguard recently won the
2008 Scholastic National

A

class Championship, the second straight year the guard has
received this honor. This win could mean a promotion to the more
difficult Double A class and a chance at competing in the world
championships.
Along with the overall championship, several individual members,
and the group’s band boosters, were given special recognitions by
the California Color Guard Circuit. Senior David Bergen was awarded
the Harry Ariza Memorial Scholarship worth $500; senior Melissa
Tabrizi received an outstanding performer award; and the boosters
received the Outstanding Show Sponsor award.

4-H’ers model fashion creations

HOLLISTER – Seventeen San Benito County youngsters participated in the annual San Benito County 4-H Fashion Show last Friday, April 11.

Members chose the theme, “A Rainforest Fashion Show,” for the event, held at Hollister Christian Fellowship Church.

Emcee for the evening was 2008-09 4-H All-Star Lindsey Shelton, who welcomed some 100 guests, family members and models.

Kelly Whiteley designed the program for the evening, and Emily Whiteley designed the flyer for advertising the event. Photographer was Sunny Brawley and room mother was Katy Kakebeen. Evening escorts were Justin and Brandon Harami.

The girls modeled outfits they sewed during the club’s project year. Some members also competed in the Recycled and Purchased categories, too.

Participants were Katie Smithee, Heather Pereira, Callie Cuthberson, Blaire Strohn, Katherine Hastings, Gianna Brigantino, Rachel Smithee, Hannah Cartelli, Rachel Brigantino, Sarah Klassen, Rebecca Cartelli, Mikael Enz, Alyssa Russell, Alexis Sanchez, Sarah Shelton, Ashlyn Russell and Erica Leung.

After the modeling, participants and guests shared a dessert buffet.

Local infantryman returns from Iraq

HOLLISTER – Spc. Kevin Mullen of Hollister recently returned from a tour of duty in Iraq, where he was stationed for 15 months. Mullen served with the U.S. Army 3rd Infantry Division, Ft. Stewart, Georgia.

Mullen is the son of Barry and Luz Mullen and brother of Kyle Mullen, all of Hollister. He is a 2005 graduate of San Andreas High School. After a week visit, Mullen returned to his base.

Achievement award honorable mention goes to Mancino

HOLLISTER – Joseph Mancino, a San Benito High School student, received honorable mention in applied arts from the Bank of America Achievement Awards. He received $500. In the competition, students answer questions about topics ranging from politics and ethics.

Categories included fine arts, applied arts, liberal arts and science and math. Mancino was one of five students to receive honorable mention for the Applied Arts category, in addition to the first, second and third place winners.
