The Hollister Tiny Mites showed up to play Hollister Viking football. Antonio Caro scored on a quarterback keeper. The defense held strong, giving up only one touchdown in the second half.
Mighty Mites
Hollister 12, Cambrian Valley 12
On Sunday, the Hollister Mighty Mites showed resolve as they came from behind to tie the Cambrian Valley Longhorns, 12-12.
After a controversial opening play, the Vikings found themselves playing catch-up as the Longhorns took an early lead. Led by Aaron Tobia, the Hollister defense, including Tristan Wahl, Colby Noble and Mike Casarez, held tight in keeping Cambrian Valley out of their end zone for the remainder of the first half.
The Hollister Vikings came alive in the second quarter with a long push to the end zone. Following a series of carries by Nick Trimble and Justin Sanders, Kyle Cameron wove his way through the defense, scoring the first Viking goal. With the game tied up and 20 seconds left in the half, the Vikings made an onside kick that was recovered by Dominic Barrios, ensuring the Longhorns would have to wait for another scoring opportunity.
While no one scored in the third quarter, both teams hit their stride in the fourth. The Vikings once again found themselves playing catch-up as the Longhorns scored on a pass completion. The Vikings, however, were not out of the game.
Following big defensive plays by Tobia and Barrios, the Vikings were on a roll. Runs by Sanders, Tobia and quarterback Daniel Hopkins set up Sanders for the carry into the end zone. While the Longhorns made a valiant effort to make a final touchdown, a pass interception by Hopkins shut them down. As time ran out, the score was tied at 12-12
The Mighty Mites currently hold a record of 3-0-1.
Junior Pee Wees
Hollister 27, Cambrian Valley 0
Once again, the Hollister Junior Pee Wees came out strong, defeating Cambrian Valley by a shutout score of 27-0.
The defense put the stop on Cambrian Valley with huge tackles by Cody Freitas and Christopher Cook. Cambrian Valley was unable to move the ball because the Hollister defense was strong throughout the game.
The offense put 27 unanswered points on the scoreboard. Coty Freitas, Josh George, Christopher Cook and Bryan Noble made it into the end zone, but could not have done it without the help of the offensive line.
The Hollister Junior Pee Wee Vikings went undefeated last season, earning a trip to Nationals in Florida, where they placed third in the nation. The team is currently undefeated with a record of 4-0-0.
Phillip Castro also had a big defensive game. Kenny Perry had a quarterback sack. Tyler Fhurong intercepted the ball in the end zone, and Christopher Cook, also known as “Cookie,” intercepted the ball twice in the game to shut out the Longhorns.
Pee Wees
Hollister 20, Cambrian Valley 6
The fans were biting their nails at the end of the first half. The score was Cambrian Valley 6, Hollister Vikings 0. Cambrian Valley was shutting Hollister down in the first half, but Hollister never gave up. The Vikings came out fighting in the second half, scoring three unanswered touchdowns. Marcus Darnell, Cody Cameron, and Angel Pasillas, were able to get into the end zone to put the Vikings on top. The defense was strong the entire game, not giving up any points in the second half to give the Vikings a victory. The Hollister Pee Wee Vikings are undefeated with a record of 4-0-0.
Junior Midgets
Cambrian Valley 22, Hollister 0
Hollister Vikings came out fighting, but came up short of a win. Nate Garza played well on both sides of the ball. Edwin Campbell caught a pass from Austin Wall for a gain of 10 yards. Danny Buzzetta also threw a completed pass to gain some yardage. The Vikings never gave up and played hard the entire came. The Junior Midgets have a record of 1-0-3.
Midgets
Hollister 8. Cambrian Valley 8
The tension and adrenaline were running high during this entire game. The fans were on the edge of their seats. It was a defensive battle to the end. Isaiah Quintana and Anthony Cervantes were able to push the Longhorns offense back behind the line of scrimmage on numerous occasions.
The entire defense played with heart and emotion, preventing the Longhorns from scoring in the first half. The second half began 0-0. The Longhorns gave up the ball on their own 21-yard line. It did not take long for the Viking offense to get the ball into the end zone. Ricky Mungia pitched the ball to Anthony Cervantes, who ran to the outside, eventually running into the end zone to put the first points on the board. The Vikings were not going to settle for only six points. The Vikings came out onto the field to attempt a PAT. Jacob Martin was the holder. The ball was hiked, placed, and kicked through the uprights by Adam Huaracha for two extra points, making the score 8-0.
The Longhorns came back and answered with a touchdown of their own, and were able to tie the game with a kick through the uprights.
The defense battled hard for the remainder of the game, not allowing the Longhorns any more opportunities to score. The game ended in a tie, 8-8. The Hollister Midgets have a record of 1-1-2
