A flu vaccine is prepared during a free clinic at the Veterans Memorial Building.

The county’s public health department warned that there could be an increase in the number of flu cases for San Benito County in the coming weeks, and stressed that residents should still consider vaccinations.

Influenza activity in California is now widespread – defined as outbreaks of influenza or increases in influenza-like-illnesses in at least half of the regions in the state, according to the county department.

Dr. Alvaro Garza, the county public health officer, said in a statement that with an increase in flu activity in California, it is likely there will be more cases in San Benito County – and that it is not too late to get vaccinated against the flu.

California generally sees a peak of flu activity in February and March, according to the county.
The local experts noted that in addition to getting vaccinated, it’s important to practice good hand washing and other good health habits. People should do the following:

• While sick, limit contact with others, stay at home, don’t go to work or school
• cover your nose and mouth with your arm when coughing or sneezing
• wash hands thoroughly and frequently with soap and water or use an alcohol-based rub
• avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth
