Illegal signs advertising a bird mart in San Jose have gone up around San Benito County, though a Hollister city ordinance prohibits them.

Skirting the sign law becomes increasingly common
It’s a fairly common zoning violation these days, but a promoter
advertising a Bird Mart at the San Jose Fairgrounds recently, and
illegally, posted an array of the rectangular signs around
Hollister. They are similar in nature to the Gun Show signs that
the Public Works feature profiled several months back.
As the Pinnacle pointed out then, the city explicitly bars the
use of such off-site advertising signs, which can take any
nice-looking fence or pole and turn it into an eye sore, a tacky
one at that.

According to the Hollister Municipal Code, the off-site signs are among an array of sign types that are prohibited in city limits. The code lists off the banned types and includes “Off-site advertising signs except as provided for in the section entitled Master Sign Program.” That is in section 17.20 of the municipal code, which can be found on the city’s Web site, www.hollister.ca.gov.

Violators such as the Bird Mart promoter are subject to daily fines of $100 for each offense. The Hollister Code Enforcement Division would handle such complaints, but Mike Chambless, who heads the office, could not be reached immediately before press time.
