Flooding amplified near old main lines
Residents who live on the end of San Benito Street near Nash Road have been forced to avoid an array of flooded areas along the side of the road – a problem compounded by the old age of the main lines underground.
There have been water backups throughout the week in Hollister, but not too many as bad as the grouping of large puddles on the south end of the city’s main street. Community Services Director Clay Lee noted how there are some “grade issues” there and older water lines with which crews are dealing.
“We try to keep the inlets as clean as possible,” he said. “They drain fairly quickly if they don’t have a bunch of debris in them.”
Those flooded areas are in the vicinity of a set of water mains that broke in October. Lee said the problem with flooding isn’t necessarily the size of the pipes, but it has more to do with angles and the flow. He said that street “probably” could use more inlets to receive running water.
The long-term fix is repairing the downtown main system, but in the short term, it’s addressing problems as they arise.
“We’ve got a significant number of our crews out there trying to keep the drainage flowing properly,” Lee said.
