John Smith project delayed for environmental work
Plans for a realignment of the intersection John Smith Road at Fairview Road has been delayed for 18 months due to environmental issues and the requirement for a biological study of the area.
The county’s public works administrator Steve Wittry told supervisors Tuesday that an initial proposal to conduct a realignment project to the John Smith Road intersection has to be delayed. And the board followed suit and approved a contract for environmental services with LSA Associates for June 2011 through June 2013 and for no more than $53,285.
County officials noted how the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is mandating the work – currently, there is just one lane for drivers turning onto John Smith Road – and Supervisor Anthony Botelho for one followed up by calling such environmental requirements “a job killer.”
