A tree branch that had been hanging over the sidewalk near the entrance to Mars Hill coffee shop downtown for more than a week was torn off during the past week and eventually removed.

The city-owned tree and its hanging branch were featured in last week’s paper after City of Hollister’s Public Works Department official Marcelo Orta was made aware of the situation.

The city routinely addresses such overhanging branches when they become aware of them, but in this instance it seems someone took matters into their own hands and brought the limb down. It sat on the sidewalk for a couple of days before being removed.

Orta said last week that the city has hired a seasonal employee with tree-trimming experience to address issues like those presented by this tree’s branch. The employee is trimming low-hanging limbs, clearing sign blockages and improving intersection visibility throughout the city.

“We are concentrating on the downtown business areas and will be moving onto heavy traffic streets then to neighbor trees,” Orta said last week.
