The young puppy found in a McDonald’s bag along a road near San Juan Bautista is in good health, the Hollister Animal Shelter supervisor said.

Hollister police received the puppy, which was about 17 days old and appeared to be a yellow lab or golden retriever, on Dec. 8. A citizen found the dog, which appears to be a lab mix of some kind, along Mission Vineyard Road.

“The puppy’s doing really good,” said Julie Carreiro, who heads the animal shelter. “It’s not injured. It’s eating good.”

The man found the puppy and brought it to the animal shelter in Hollister. It’s unknown if the puppy was placed on the side of the road or thrown from a vehicle, according to police. As of Thursday, there was no new information on potential suspects in the matter, Carreiro said.

The puppy been placed temporarily in a local animal foster home. Carreiro said it will be another four weeks until the dog is ready for adoption.
