Dear Editor:
I am a lifelong Republican, but I think this recall is a farce.
I first voted in 1952 (you had to be 21 then) and had the pleasure as a WP cadet of marching in the inauguration parade for Eisenhower and Nixon. I have always voted Republican except in 1964 for Lyndon Johnson instead of Goldwater (probably made a mistake, I was in Vietnam anyway four years later).
I voted against Gray Davis, but he was fairly elected by a majority. And I don’t understand what heinous crime he has committed. He didn’t cheat on his wife or accept bribes that I know of. He alone is not responsible for the state budget deficit.
Some well intentioned but misguided fool in past years wrote a recall procedure that was adopted and never tested until this year.
Now we are faced with the possibility of having a new governor with maybe only 10 percent of the vote cast for him or her. But what really worries me is the precedent.
In the future, all a governor will have to do is hiccup and we can have another recall with signatures of only a small percentage of the voters.
My wife and I are not sure we even want to vote in this election, but maybe we had better considering the candidates.
