More on the cannery
“I’m a curious citizen and I’m calling about the cannery and I’m wondering also what is happening with the big large million-dollar sewer bill they owe the city for – what’s the status quo on that? Will the city still allow them to operate owing them all that money again this year. It seems like the cannery is getting by with an awful lot while the normal citizen has to pay their bills on time and have to make sure they’re not noisy to their neighbors. So what’s up with the cannery.”
The Red Phone spoke with city manager Clint Quilter who said the cannery has taken efforts to mitigate the noise for the upcoming season, however, he could not go into detail on what measures were taken. He did say the cannery has paid its sewer charges for this year and the city is working on a resolution for the past due amount of $1.4 million as previously reported in the Free Lance. Quilter said a resolution should be reached by the end of the fiscal year in July.
San Benito Foods’ Steve Arnoldy called the Red Phone and said several things have changed at the cannery. He said the noisy steam-driven equipment has been replaced with electrical engines and they have modified the boiler in the cannery, all of which should reduce the noise. When asked if the cannery will be quieter this year, he said, “I believe so.”
Book’em Red Phone
A caller commented on the numerous phone books pervading San Benito County.
“This county has only 54,000 people yet we have at least six different phone books now, which means you have to buy at least six different ads and they have dropped people’s name out of nearly every book if you change phone companies. You now have to keep six books on your counter instead of one and all of them say ‘Well, there is nothing we can do it about it.'”
It’s true, Red Phone queried the San Benito County Free Library and found exactly six phone books covering Hollister, San Juan Bautista and San Benito County. There is the South Valley Phone Directory, The Local’s Book, SBC Pacific Bell Smart Yellow Pages, Verizon Superpages, the Valley Yellow Pages and TransWestern Publishing all claiming this area as its territory.
What do you think San Benito – more books, more problems? The Red Phone called Carey Brock, a spokesperson for SBC, and she said the publishing companies have access to SBC’s published numbers for a price. SBC and the main carriers are required by law to make their published database of numbers available for sale to directory assistance publishers, she said. She could not provide the price, however.
