Dear Editor,
I am writing to respond to a statement made by Simon Salinas in a recent article regarding the governor’s veto of a bill that would allow illegal immigrants to obtain California drivers’ licenses. Mr. Salinas made reference to the old “race card” that “Americans” don’t want the jobs that illegal aliens perform in California. I’m so tired of listening to the reverse discrimination that goes on among certain individuals and groups in our state. I am a white male and I have worked in restaurant jobs ever since I was 15. I cleaned toilets, swept floors, cooked food and waited on customers for years as I went through school and even after graduation.
I resent the insinuation by Mr. Salinas that only illegal Hispanic immigrants would work in such menial jobs. There are people from all ethnic backgrounds who work hard in those positions, not just illegal aliens. The other question I have is why an individual running for State Senate is so concerned about the plight of people who can’t legally vote for him? Is it a political trick to gain sympathy among legal Hispanic voters? Why limit his crusade to Hispanics then, when there are many illegal aliens in California from other ethnic backgrounds? I just don’t buy such a biased take on the issue. I would prefer the candidate do something for the tax paying, legal citizens who will pay his salary if elected, regardless of their ethnic background.
