If you made it through last week and the humidity that hovered over San Benito County at times during the weekend, you’re in luck, somewhat.

The National Weather Service is forecasting slightly cooler temperatures for this week, a mild relief from temperatures that ranged from the high 80s to low 90s during the past few days.

“The heat and this weekend’s humidity have been unbearable,” said Joanne Guthrie, who was at Dunne Park with her 7-year-old daughter Laurie on Sunday. “I can’t remember a stretch of hot weather like this in a long time, and I just hope it cools down somewhat soon.”

Temperatures should hover around the 80s inland this week while coastal temperatures are expected to cool slightly, according to the NWS.

Look for highs near 90 today, and for Tuesday and Wednesday, expect areas of morning low clouds and fog turning to partly cloudy by mid-morning. Highs should range from the low 50s at night to the 80s during the day.

On Saturday, the mercury gave residents a brief spell, reaching 82. But the one-day cooling wasn’t enough for Robert Peters, who was buying four bags of ice at Safeway.

“I’m trying to keep cool inside and out,” Peters joked. “Most of this (ice) is going for the family barbecue. We want to keep everyone happy and cool. And some of it is going to the kids, to play with. They love the hot weather and playing in the water.”

On Sunday, temperatures remained bearable, reaching 83 with sunny skies throughout most of the day, but with a bit more humidity.

On Thursday, expect mostly sunny skies with temperatures in the mid 80s. Evening and early morning temperatures are forecasted to be in the mid 50s.

To kick off the annual Gilroy Garlic Festival, which runs Friday through Sunday, expect sunny skies with temperatures in the mid 80s.
