After posting scores in his first two go-rounds in bull riding last week at the 2010 National Junior High Finals Rodeo, Paicines resident Brody Sans fell short in the championship round on Saturday in Gallup, N.M., but still finished in ninth place overall out of some 30 competitors.
Competing in what is considered the largest junior high rodeo in the country, Sans recorded a 59 during his first go-round last Tuesday — placing him 10th overall — then scored a 68 on Thursday evening that positioned him in third place for the second go-round.
However, the Paicines resident received a no-score in the championship round on Saturday and finished with 127 points, missing a top-five spot by just 17 points.
Luke Wicks of Tamworth, Australia earned the junior bull riding title with 212 points. The Aussie recorded scores of 72, 59 and 81 during his three go-rounds to take the championship.
Trip Weaver of Lakeland, Fla., and Cody Culver of Natrona, Wyo., finished in second and third place with averages of 199 and 187, respectively. The remaining competitors in the top 14 all finished within close proximity of one another, with fourth-place finisher Wyatt Rogers of Rose, Okla., securing 161 points, and 14th-place finisher Cody Wheeler of Osceola, Mo., scoring 116 points.
Sans’ ninth-place finish in the nation was nevertheless a strong performance, though, especially after considering the junior bull rider grabbed the last qualifying spot in the event when he finished in fourth place at the California State Finals in May.
Meanwhile, fellow Paicines resident Cheyenne Rey finished 24th in barrel racing and 100th in goat tying at the the Sixth Annual NJHFR, which featured more than 1,000 contestants from 47 states, Canadian provinces and Australia.
Rey, who was named All-Around Champion in the Junior High Rodeo Division at the California State Finals in Plymouth after taking first place in barrel racing and goat tying, fell short of qualifying within the top 20 of each event to advance to Saturday’s championship round in New Mexico.
Rey clocked times of 17.472 seconds and 16.847 seconds through two go-rounds of barrel racing, giving her an average time of 34.319 seconds and a 24th-place finish out of some 150 competitors.
In goat tying, the Paicines cowgirl recorded a time of 11.286 seconds in the event, which placed her in 14th for the go-round. But a no-time in the second go-round dropped her from the running.
Cayla Melby of Backus, Minn., earned the barrel-racing title with an average time of 50.04 seconds, while Jessica Gray of Sparr, Fla., pocketed the goat-tying championship with an average time of 27.927 seconds.
Team California, meanwhile, compiled 3,015 points to finish in 12th place, behind team champion Oklahoma (9,025).
