County officials are awaiting a routine psychological evaluation before taking on board a permanent chief probation officer.

“The judges wanted a psychological evaluation, which is typical of law enforcement officers,” said Rich Inman, director of internal services for San Benito County.

Inman said a tentative offer has been made to the top candidate. The evaluation could be done by Friday, Inman said.

It’s been more than a year since former Chief Probation Officer Deborah Botts parted ways with the county.

Longtime county employee Mary Covell had stepped in as interim chief probation officer, but retired last month.

Duane G. Tanner, former head of the Monterey County Probation Department, has been contracted to act as the county’s chief probation officer until a permanent successor is in place.
