An independent citizens’ oversight committee is being formed to review and report to the public on the Aromas-San Juan Unified School District’s expenditures of Measure Z money.

The $9.7 million general obligation bond approved by voters in November 2010 will pay off a $1.9 million facilities loan still owed for the construction of Anzar High School and it would fund facility improvements at schools throughout the district.

The seven-member Measure Z Independent Citizens’ Oversight Committee will feature residents from the district’s attendance area who meet specific requirements, including:

– a parent or guardian of a child enrolled in the district

– a person who is a parent or guardian of a child in the district and is an active member of a parent-teacher organization such as the P.T.A. or a school site council

– a person who is active in a business organization representing the business community located in the district

– a person who is active in a senior citizens’ organization

– one member who is active in a “bona-fide” taxpayers’ association

– two at-large community members

Measure Z extends property taxes for an additional 25 years beyond the 15 years a current bond has remaining. Taxpayers will owe approximately $53 per $100,000 of assessed value of their property per year.

Supporters of the measure said the measure took a creative approach to school improvement financing by not raising taxes.

Proceeds are targeted at projects such as replacing portable classrooms with permanent facilities at Aromas School and upgrading technology, plumping, heating and cooling systems in all district schools.

Applications are being accepted at the district office through 4 p.m. Friday, Feb. 11 and are available from the office or the district website at www.asjusd.k12.ca.us.

Appointments to the committee will be made by the Board of Trustees.
