The Mission City has been named a 2008 Dozen Distinctive Destinations and was recognized at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Cutting Horse Restaurant on Third Street.
The National Trust For Historic Preservation bestowed the honor upon San Juan Bautista, citing its “unparalleled collection of colonial architecture.” The trust stated the city “showcases Old California like no other.”
The town of about 1,500 residents on Highway 101 joined Aiken, S.C.; Apalachicola, Fla.; Columbus, Miss.; Crested Butte, Colo.; Fort Davis, Texas; Friday Harbor, Wash.; Portland, Ore.; Portsmouth, N.H.; Red Wing, Minn.; Ste. Genevieve, Mo.; and Wilmington, N.C. as the 2008 Dozen Distinctive Destinations.
Past destinations include Key West, Fla., Waimea and Astoria, Ore., where movies such as the “Goonies,” “Free Willy” and “Kindergarten Cop” were filmed. San Juan Bautista is no stranger to movie sets, as Alfred Hitchcock’s “Vertigo” was filmed there 50 years ago.*
