The event will showcase almost 200 pre-1973 vintage cars, ranging from 1930s Model Ts to souped up classic Corvettes, that will line the main drag on Third Street in San Juan on Sunday, May 23.
Participants will include members of the Gold Coast Rods Car Club, but anyone with a pre-1973 car who would like to be a part of the show is welcome to register, said Terry Wecker, president of the club.
“We encourage all people who have cars or just like cars to come out and enjoy the day,” Wecker said.
Registrants will start the day off around 9 a.m. with a cruise from the Northridge Mall in Salinas to San Juan, arriving in the historical city around 10 a.m.
Coordinators of the event, which includes car club members, the San Juan Bautista Chamber of Commerce and the city of San Juan, will be registering participants who do not choose to cruise beginning at 7 a.m., Wecker said.
Many of the cars already registered are vehicular jewels, Wecker said.
“Some of the cars are valued in excess of $100,000 and others have won national awards at car shows throughout the United States,” Wecker said. “And, you’ve got this great setting with lots of interesting shops and the weather should be absolutely fantastic.”
Besides being inundated with hundreds of automobiles, the city will also be host to “Class Act,” a Monterey-based 1950s-style rock ‘n’ roll band, said Matthew Medeiros, secretary for the San Juan chamber.
The band will play from 11 a.m. until noon, and then from 1 to 3 p.m.
While the event is directed toward car lovers, anyone can enjoy the day’s festivities, Medeiros said.
“There will be good music, shopping and lots of fun,” he said.
The chamber is also asking for volunteers to help direct parking, because the main streets in downtown San Juan will be closed for the event.
There will be no parking on Third Street between Muckelemi and Franklin streets, and on Washington, Mariposa and Polk streets between Second and Fourth streets from 2 a.m. until 6 p.m. Sunday.
