In recognition of National Volunteer Week, the San Juan Bautista Library and the San Benito County Adult Literacy Program applauded the efforts of more than 100 local volunteers who donated their time and support to the library and the community.

Librarian Pat Larkin and Barbara Scott, executive director of the Adult Literacy Program, gave out 110 certificates and pins to volunteers Wednesday and gave a special plaque to the library’s Volunteer of the Year.

Adele Pimentel, the library’s storyteller, sparkled when Larkin called her name to receive the award.

“Rain or shine, she’s always there,” Larkin said.

Pimentel said she loved working with the children, telling them stories and sharing her puppets with them.

“I really enjoy what I’m doing,” she said.

From washing windows to teaching English lessons, Larkin said volunteers work hard. Without the gracious giving of their time, she said, the success of the library’s programs would not have been possible.

“Anytime we asked for help they were there,” she said. “They even painted the men’s room for us after someone wrote graffiti on the walls.”
