A local veterans group has launched a Web site, which features links to other veterans groups and information on past and upcoming events in San Benito County.

The site – www.sbcveterans.org – is sponsored by the San Benito County Veterans Coalition, the same organization that in November marshaled the first local Veterans’ Day parade in 50 years.

“Part of the vision is we wanted to keep veterans affairs at the forefront of the community,” said Richard Herrera, director of the Veterans Coalition. “My duty is to do what I can to assist fellow veterans and members of the community.”

The site, which went online May 15, includes links to the three local veterans organizations – the Veterans of Foreign Wars posts in Hollister and San Juan Bautista and the American Legion in Hollister. Within those pages, the Veterans Coalition has information about each post’s history, along with current officers and meeting schedules.

Also included among the site’s 18 pages are pages for the Veterans Day Parade and the Veterans Memorial Building, which will be rededicated Monday after more than two years of planning and renovations. An itinerary for the rededication ceremony and local events Monday can be found at the site.

It also includes links to recent news articles from the Free Lance regarding veterans issues and links to numerous organizations and companies throughout the county.

Herrera said the timing of the Web site announcement purposefully coincided with the rededication of the Veterans Memorial Building.

“We could have announced this anytime,” he said. “We wanted to tie it together with the Memorial Day events.”

Additionally, there is a “Veterans Profile” in which veterans can log in, enter their names and share information about their branch of the service and experiences.

“It’s a good way to gather information about local veterans and to keep updated on what’s going on,” he said.
