Diana Fonseca, a San Benito High School senior, won first place in the 2011 California Coastal Commission Youth Art and Poetry Contest 2011. This is the seventh time in 10 years that an SBHS student has won the state contest.

Madison Fernstrom, a junior, and Cara Marie Esteban, a sophomore, received honorable mentions.

Fonseca’s work is displayed on the CCC website, at www.coastal.ca.gov/publiced/poster/poster.html. It will be shown in traveling exhibitions throughout the state. Fonseca’s art is also featured in a solo exhibition, “Hollywood Comes to Hollister,” at Ella’s Italian Restaurant, 170 Airline Hwy., through April 9. The show includes 16 drawings of classic movie stars. Fonseca plans to attend Gavilan College for two years before transferring to an art school. Her goal is to become an art teacher.

John Robrock, a San Benito High School teacher, said participation in student art competitions is an integral part of his curriculum, particularly in the regional occupational program. Contests offer students an opportunity to focus on creating a solution to a design problem by a deadline, typical in the work life of a working artist, he wrote, in a press release. For contest winners, there is the added benefit of an achievement to list on college applications and resumes, as well as the cash awards, scholarships, gifts such as art supplies, award ceremonies, television interviews, opportunities for publication of art in books and websites or, in the case of four students, trips to Washington, D.C.
