Challenged for the first time in nearly two decades on the job, Marshal Robert Scattini was re-elected Tuesday to serve six more years as the enforcer of the county’s court system.
Scattini received 59 percent of the votes, while Joseph Alvarado received 22 percent and Larry Nunes 19 percent.
“Oh, that’s great, that’s great,” Scattini said when he heard the results Tuesday.
He went on: “Why make change if you’re doing a good job?”
Neither Alvarado, a communications dispatch manager, nor Nunes, a private investigator, returned calls Tuesday.
Scattini first joined the office in 1987, when his position was called county constable. He was subsequently elected, unchallenged, twice before Tuesday’s victory.
As was the case when he won a City Council race in November 2002, Scattini said he didn’t do much campaigning for this race. He didn’t post signs and merely placed advertisements in local newspapers in recent weeks.
Scattini said he works seven days a week as marshal – serving court orders on weekends – and plans to continue doing so.
“I’m not a lump in the log. They see me working seven days a week,” he said.
He said he expects changes in the Marshal’s Office in the coming years. He has already talked with local judges about courtroom security, and he plans on enhancing his list of reserves, he said.
He said he was surprised Alvarado, a Marshal’s Office reserve for 12 years, ran for his job.
“I’m just surprised a guy who worked for me would run against me after I gave him all the breaks.”
