In response to the Hollister School District’s board of trustees voting to eliminate the elementary school music program at the end of the year, both the San Benito High School and Rancho-Maze booster are joining together to keep the program alive.

In a joint effort, the boosters are seeking a goal of $156,000 worth of donations to fund the program over the next two years, according to a statement from the boosters. Under the title Mr. Ostenson’s Save the Music Drive, the boosters are asking for small donations from the community.

Facing severe cuts to fill its deficit, Hollister district officials have announced the elementary school program will be eliminated next school year.

“The program currently serves over 600 students in all six elementary schools,” according to the statement. “If the elementary school program goes away, it will be one year before the award-winning middle school music program starts to collapse.”

Eventually, the eliminated program will affect the high school band as well, according to the statement.

To help, the boosters are accepting donations through its website savehollistermusic.org or through the mail at Baler Band Boosters, Attn: Save the Music, P.O. Box 373, Hollister, CA 95024.
