HONORS

Rodney E. Garcia

Pvt. Rodney Garcia, of Gilroy, graduated from the 198th Infantry Brigade of the United States Army Infantry School at Fort Benning, Ga. on Feb. 13 and completed the Airborne Course at Fort Benning March 20. He is now stationed at Fort Bragg, N.C.

Pvt. Garcia had to pass a physical fitness training test along with other Basic Combat Training task which included drill and command/rifle-bayonet fighting, grenade and mortar training, self-aid and buddy aid including starting IV’s and chest tubes. He also learned use of protective mask, clothing, principles of communications and parachuting.

Garcia is the son of Rogelio Garcia and Paula Orosco, brother of Rogelio Garcia Jr., Jacqueline Cherry, Catherine Aguilar and Lori Salgado, and sister-in-law Laura. He is uncle to 10 nephews and nieces.

Students honored at UC Santa Barbara

ENGAGEMENTS

Dubrul/Freitas

Larry and Dawn Dubrul, of Hollister, announce the engagement of their daughter Ashley Fawn Dubrul to Justin Louis Freitas, son of John and Tammy Freitas, of Hollister.

Justin proposed to Ashley on a romantic evening in Santa Cruz. Though they knew each other in high school and graduated from San Benito High School in 2005, they fell in love in the summer of 2008.

Ashley works at a local coffeehouse and is attending Gavilan College. She is studying to be a nurse and recently applied for the LVN program. Justin enlisted in the United States Army in March 2006. He served 15 months in Iraq and returned home safely. He will serve another year.

The couple plans to wed July 24, 2010.

Gomez/Kavie

Irene Gomez, of Castroville, and Art Kavie, of Reno, Nev. are engaged to be married.

Gomez is a long-time resident of Watsonville who moved to Reno to be near her fiance. An engagement party for Gomez and Kavie was held at the home of her brother Richard Martinez on March 7. The party was attended by nearly all of Gomez’ friends and family. Wedding plans to be announced.
