ENGAGEMENTS
Laurabeth Clark, daughter of David and Rachael Clark, and Daniel Von Fange, son of Eric and Joyce Von Fange, are engaged and plan to be married Jan. 6, 2007 in Waxshaw, N.C. Laurabeth is a receptionist and Daniel owns his own Web designing company. They plan to live in Rock Hill, N.C.
HONORS
Lauryn Nicole Rossi
Lauryn Nicole Rossi, a 2005 graduate of Gilroy High School, recently completed basic training in the U.S. Army reserve at Ft. Jackson, S.C. She was selected as “banner carrier” to lead her company in graduation, and was awarded a medal for this honor. She ranked second in athletics in her company of 300 men and women.
PFC Rossi is presently at Ft. Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas, as a medical specialized trainee. She will graduate from Ft. Lewis, Washington in April 2007.
PFC Rossi is the daughter of Jennifer and Timothy Pierleoni, of Gilroy, and the granddaughter of Bob and Lis Gifford, of Morgan Hill, and Jackie and Ralph Pierleoni of Windsor.
Friendship remains 60 years later
Joe Mata, of Gilroy, and Peter Rywalski, of Toledo, Ohio, were inducted into military service during World War II. Joe was assigned to the 70th Division, 274th Infantry regiment, “Trailblazers.” Peter was assigned to the 100th Division, 397th Infantry regiment, “The Regiment of the Century.”
When the war ended, Joe and Peter were transferred to the 3rd Infantry Division and the 7th Infantry Regiment, military police, to serve in the occupation of Germany. They were stationed in Hersfeld, Germany. This is where the two met, served for another year and became very good friends.
The two returned to the U.S. in June 1946, honorably discharged, and the friendship continued with cards and letters.
At Christmas 1946, Joe and his family sent Peter’s family a large crate of oranges, as Joe’s family owned the Gilroy market, “El Charrito” at the time.
Sixty years later, Joe and Peter continue to call each other and send cards, and Joe keeps Peter informed on all of Gilroy’s happenings, including the annual Garlic Festival.
Bobbie Holt
Bobbie Holt from Gilroy, a student at Central Coast College, was recently recognized for achievement in a Success Rally. Success Rallies are held at the school every six weeks to coincide with the completion of course modules. Students are given awards reflecting the core values of the school’s integrated approach towards education, focusing on those qualities deemed most important towards success in the workplace.
Milestone achievements recognized at Success Rallies at Central Coast College include honor roll (3.5 GPA and above), most improved, positive mental attitude, outstanding effort and perfect attendance.
Cast honored with ovations
Morgan Hill and San Martin residents, and high school students, including Shelby Diebold, Natalie Hendricks, Rachel Giacalone, Amanda Krall, Tiana Tuttle and Zach Hasbany, performed to 11 sold-out audiences in the recent production of “Beauty and the Beast” at Presentation High School. More than 80 students auditioned and the amazing cast of 30 received a standing ovation at every curtain bow.
