Sheriff Curtis Hill announced today he will not seek reelection in 2010 for a fourth term in office. Below is the statement Hill released following his announcement to the staff on his intentions. Look to the Pinnacle on Friday for an in-depth interview with Hill about his career and decision against running again. The following is the statement from Hill:
“To the Citizen’s of San Benito County:
It’s with mixed feelings today that I announce my intent not to run for re-election to the position of Sheriff for the County of San Benito. I will be completing my term in office on January 3, 2011.
It’s never easy to leave a place and team of people you care about. I started working as a Deputy Sheriff in 1976, and for the next 33 plus years I have worked to keep this strong and resilient community safe. I feel fortunate to have been given the opportunity to work in this great county. It’s an experience that has defined my life and one that I have difficulty saying goodbye to.
When I began my third term as your Sheriff in 2006, my wife Ellen, son Kevin and I decided together that I would not run for a fourth term in 2010. We are moving on to the next stage in our lives and it is time. I leave a Sheriff’s Office that is stronger and more dependable than ever.
We’re doing more with less. And we’ve made great strides to keep our streets safe and our neighborhoods secure. I’ve always felt the need to leave the Office better than the way I found it and I’m happy that I’ve accomplished this important goal. The next County Sheriff will inherit a well-oiled machine that will continue to serve the people well.
In the coming weeks and months, like most San Benito County voters, I’ll be evaluating the candidates running for Sheriff and will be carefully considering their credentials. The next Sheriff will be charged with improving an Office in a tough financial environment.
There’s no doubt about the fact that we’ll need a tough, well-rounded leader who can make difficult budgeting decisions while serving as motivator-in-chief for our deputies.
While I won’t be issuing an endorsement now, I plan to announce a decision soon.”
