The suspected gunman and an accomplice remain at large after a shooting Monday afternoon in a bustling Hollister parking lot, and on Tuesday police released the victim’s name and confirmed gang-related involvement in the crime.
An injury to the left arm of the shooting victim, Hollister resident Enrique Torres, 26, is not expected to be life threatening, according to police.
Torres is a reputed Norteno gang member, according to police, and the three suspects in the shooting are Surenos.
The Hollister Police Department did not release the name of a suspect arrested about 45 minutes after the 1 p.m. shooting in the Kragen Auto Parts parking lot. The store is surrounded by shopping center stores and restaurants on Hollister’s south side.
Police are continuing the investigation. “We’re still working on some leads,” said Hollister police Capt. Richard Vasquez.
A verbal dispute between Torres and the shooter occurred inside the store and moved into the parking lot. The Sureno pulled a handgun from his waistband and fired one shot, hitting Torres in the left arm, according to police.
Investigators believe the three men immediately jumped into a Honda Civic and fled the scene. A sheriff’s deputy identified the Civic in downtown Hollister about 45 minutes after the shooting and arrested one suspect, but the two others had exited the car before the stop.
The attempted homicide is the second of 2004, and there have been no homicides this year, according to police records supervisor Eva Foster.
Anyone with information about the shooting should call police Capt. Richard Vasquez at 636-4330.
