Professional golfer Fred Couples sure knew what he was doing when he helped design the San Juan Oaks golf course.

Rolling hills lined with mature oak trees, a front nine that plays through a valley replete with lakes, interconnecting streams and native grasslands and holes that supply some spectacular views of pristine San Juan Valley countryside.

For that, among other reasons, the San Juan Oaks Golf Club has been named the Course of the Year by the California Golf Course Owners Association.

The California Golf Course Owners Association (CGCOA) is a chapter of the National Golf Course Owners Association and represents approximately 300 courses throughout the state.

“It has a nice design and brings a lot of the natural environment into play,” said Sa Juan Oaks Vice President Scott Fuller. “It has a natural feel to it and our course is in great condition.”

The San Juan Oaks course beat out the likes of the Pebble Beach Company, which includes the Spy Glass and Spanish Bay courses, and the Poppy Hills course on the Monterey Peninsula.

Fuller said that although San Juan Oaks has won other awards for its course, the CGCOA award is slightly different.

Aside from course appearance, judges also looked at management quality, contribution to its community and a significant contribution to promotion of the game.

San Juan Oaks has donated money and gift certificates for food and golf play to the YMCA, Community Pantry and the United Way. The course also sponsors a Hollister Heat softball team and a youth soccer team in San Juan Bautista.

San Juan Oaks is also the home course for the Anzar Hawks varsity golf team, sponsors special youth clinics through the Hollister Recreation Department and has a junior golf team.

In a recent survey, Golf Digest asked its 1.5 million subscribers to rank 5,000 public and resort courses in North America on the overall golf experience based on service and value. San Juan Oaks received special recognition as one of the top courses in North America and ranked in the top 10 in California for good service, and in the top 10 for value. San Juan was the only California course to rank high in both categories.
