Event volunteer and local resident Max Martinez demonstrates the Chicken Dance during San Juan Bautista’s revival of the Chicken Festival on Sunday, Sept. 16.

The Chicken Festival had a soft return to San Juan Bautista this month. Families converged downtown Sept 16 to celebrate the chicken with live music, dancing and a chicken cook-off.

The event, which had about a 10-year respite, was revived with a fowl-crowing contest featuring some serious cock-a-doodle-doos, as well as live chicken displays hosted by local 4-H clubs.

Visitors had ample opportunity to check out vendor and merchant booths as well as participate in children’s activities at the Third Street event.
