Graduations and Father’s Day in South County

Summer has definitely arrived in South County. It was hot out here last week! We had over 106-degree weather for four days in a row. The kids got in a lot of swimming last week! I hope all you Dads out there had a wonderful Father’s Day, it was a beautiful day to be outside celebrating.

Congratulations go out to Shane O’Connor, Brysan O’Connor and to Karina Mendoza on their recent graduations. Shane and Brysan both graduated last Friday from King City High School while Karina graduated from UCLA. They are all Bitterwater graduates as well. Cynnie and David O’Connor hosted a barbecue for Shane last Saturday at their place. Some of those stopping by to congratulate Shane included: Donna and Laurence Hansen, Kuulei Flores, Kek and Lucy Flores, John Donham, Tony and Crystol McFarland, the Brewen Family, the Kreihbel Family, Kanani Flores and us, just to name a few.

Tim and Erika Williams headed down to Southern California to watch Karina graduate from college. Her brother Juan is still attending UCLA and will graduate in a few years while Edwin has one more year to go at Bitterwater before heading off to King City High School.

We headed down to Parkfield last Saturday afternoon to attend a celebration of Billy Brinnan’s life. It was such a beautiful, funny and sad celebration. It was definitely a tribute to Billy as there were more people in attendance there than at any wedding or party I’ve ever been celebration. I heard some stories about Billy that I’d never heard of before, and I still haven’t seen the infamous baby picture everyone was talking about. My condolences go out to the entire Brinnan Family and to all of Billy’s friends, and there are many. He was one of the nicest men I have ever met and he will be missed by everyone.

Amy Lou Hall spent last week in Bitterwater visiting from Oklahoma. She had quite a busy week visiting with family and friends. She got to see a lot of folks at the Schmidt Family Reunion the last Sunday, then, spent the rest of the week visiting with others. Jeff and Jean Schmidt took Amy Lou for a ride last Thursday through Arroyo Seco, to Carmel Valley, then, down Hwy 1 for lunch at Rocky Point, then all the way down Hwy 1 past San Simeon before heading back to Paso Robles. They went on one of the hottest days here in Bitterwater so they were able to beat the heat over on the coast. They got some beautiful pictures of Jean and Amy Lou overlooking the ocean. Amy Lou headed back to Oklahoma last Sunday.

The annual Memorial Ropings were held at the Blackburn Ranch last Saturday. Some of those attending from South County included: J.W. Brewen, Hec Hurley and Casey Sabin. Congratulations to Hec Hurley for winning the Richie Fehlman Memorial Figure 8 Roping, while the Skow brothers won the Tom Carreiro Memorial Part and Catch and Shane Higgins’ team won the Kenny Vierra Memorial Calf Branding. Shane was also the winner of the All-Around for the day.

The annual Father’s Day roping and Figure 8 eliminations were held last Sunday at Bolado Park. Congratulations to all those who qualified for the Figure 8 Roping at Bolado this weekend. The San Benito Saddle horse Show and Rodeo begins on Friday evening and goes through Sunday. Be sure to come out and watch your favorites compete in some good old-fashioned rodeo and horse show events.

Congratulations go out to Danny Cardoza who was recently inducted into the National Horse Racing Hall of Fame in Ruidoso, New Mexico. Danny is one of the winningest jockeys in horse racing’s history and he lives right here in South County. You can see him in action at Bolado Park this weekend as well.

Hope you all have a great week and be sure to stop by and say hello at the horseshow this weekend. As usual, if you have any news you’d like to share, be sure to give me a call or e-mail me at
