Fair season starts for South County
Happy belated Mother’s Day to all you wonderful moms out there.
I meant to pass on those wishes last week but I didn’t. I hope all
of you had a great day full of happiness with your friends and
family.
Spring has sprung in South County, despite the cold, wind and
showers over the weekend. You can sure tell that it’s fair time in
our neck of the woods. The grass has turned from green to brown and
cattle trucks have been moving up and down the roads. The wind has
arrived right on schedule, as it always does around fair time and
folks are starting to ship their cattle.

Many Hollister and South County moms spent last Saturday at a barrel race in Salinas. Some of those competing included Nicole Nelson, Jenae Mathis, Cynthia Fancher, Katie Weaver, Concetta Gardner, Becky Doty, Betty Sans and myself. Nicole produced the barrel race and had lots of nice goodies for all the moms out there. Thanks for a fun day, Nicole!
Jefferson School hosted a succesful “Meet and Greet” with some of the candidates for sheriff last Wednesday at the school. Darren Thompson and Ray Wood were on hand to meet with South County residents. Phil Fortino, candidate for District 4 Supervisor, hosted a South County get together last Saturday afternoon at the Baumgartner Ranch.
We hosted a Mother’s Day barbecue/roping at our place last Sunday. Despite the weather, we had a great day roping and eating off the barbecue all afternoon. Some of those who shared the day with us included the Bell Family, the Hurley Family, the Brewen Family, the Barrington Family, Blake and Jessika Willoughby, Vern Scattini and my parents.
The Salinas Valley Fair begins on Thursday, May 13 and runs through Sunday the 16th. Don’t miss the Country Rodeo on Friday, the auction on Saturday, as well as the barrel race and bull riding on Saturday night. Free entertainment includes “Trailer Choir” on Friday night and “Left of Center” on Saturday night.
Brody and I are headed to Plymouth this weekend for the Wrangler Junior High School Rodeo State Championships. Also competing from our area will be Cheyenne Rey, Averi Hubbel and Taylor Jo Hurley.
