Another successful San Benito County Saddlehorse Show and Rodeo has come and gone. Congratulations to all those who competed and won something. South County contestants had a great weekend with many winning or placing in their events. Andy, Mattie and Wacey Barrington each did well in their events. Mattie won the junior steer-stopping event and Andy won the cattle-sorting event with his partner, J.W. Brewen.

Wacey placed well in the best appearing cowboy class as well. Casey Sabin and Jeff Cabral were the big winners in the team roping while Matt Hearne won the wild cow milking along with his partner Cody Skow. Vern and Jo Ann Scattini placed in several of their events while Betty Sans and Shelly Franklin did very well in their cowhorse classes.

Danny Cardoza was the big winner in the circular track race and Richie Coefield was the big winner in the Figure 8 roping. Emily Brewen placed well in her best appearing cowgirl class and Grace Tobias won the junior reined cowhorse class. Blane and Blair Strohn both had a good weekend as well as Sierra Jo and Brody Sans.

Congratulations to Brody for winning the junior keyhole race and to Sierra for winning the junior barrel race, western horsemanship, best appearing cowgirl and the junior all-around title. It was another great horseshow, and thanks to all those producing this fun event.

While the rest of the family was competing at Bolado, Buddy and I were in Salinas at his Tournament of Champions baseball game. Unfortunately, the Reds were beaten by the Hartnell Giants, ending our season in the first round. The boys had a great season and had great coaches. Thanks to Brent Green, Ted Umstead and Ralph Rianda for such a great season. The King City Giants are still hanging in there and so far have made it to the third round of the playoffs. Good luck Giants!

King City has proved again that it can turn out some great athletes as Rory Johnsen, Shane O’Connor and Jimmy Barbree were invited to try out for the junior Olympics baseball team. Preliminary tryouts were held in Cupertino last month and once the boys made that team, they then flew to Arizona last week to try out for the West Coast team. Competing in 100 degree weather may be difficult, but I’m sure our boys will hang in their with the rest of them. I’ll let you know how the boys did in next week’s column.

Congratulations to fourth-generation Paicines resident, Hannah Fosgate on her recent academic accomplishments. Hannah, a 2006 graduate of San Benito High School, has been accepted to the Smittcamp Family Honors College at Fresno State on a full academic scholarship. Wow! She also was invited to participate on the Fresno State Varsity Equestrian Team. Before heading off to Fresno in the fall, she will be spending most of her summer working as an apprentice at Villa Rosa Dressage in Hollister. Congratulations Hannah!

Birthday wishes go out to Jeanine Madson who celebrated her birthday last week, as well as Vern Scattini and Sandy Rose. Dorothy Harlan celebrated her 97th birthday last week as well. Happy Birthday everyone!

Have a great week everyone, try to stay cool, and, if you have any news you’d like to share, be sure to give me a call or e-mail me at [email protected].
