Finally, the holiday season is over!  Once the kids go back to school, I declare the holiday season officially over. Most South County schools started back in session this week. Now, it’s time to get back in the swing of things. Baseball season will be here before we know it!

We have to get through football season, though, before we can even think about baseball. Unfortunately, my football season ended way too soon. My Broncos didn’t even make it to the playoffs this year. But I’m optimistic about our future. I love football season and I’m already having football withdrawals on Monday nights. Congratulations to Todd and Brody who won first and second in the year-end football pool we were in.  Brody was quite proud of himself for beating out all the adults who were in it!

Congratulations go out to Sami O’Connor who just completed her first semester of college work at Hartnell College. Sami received a 4.0 GPA for the first time in her life with a full load of tough college classes. Way to go, Sami! Another Bitterwater Tully alumni making Bitterwater proud!

Condolences go out to the family, friends and athletes coached by Porky Tognetti. Porky passed away last Saturday evening in King City. Porky was a driving force behind many King City sports events and even had the King City Little League Field named in his honor. Porky will be missed by all those who knew him.

Earl and J.D. Escobar hosted the Second Annual Colin Coady Classic Bull Riding event on New Year’s Eve at the Rava Arena in King City. We attended the event last year and thoroughly enjoyed it, but this year was even better. There were 30 bull riders entered in the event, 17 bronc riders and numerous junior and mini bull riders and several mutton busters as well. Some of those competing from South County were John Flook, Sam Swan, Brody Sans, Gavin King and Twyster Hurley.

The event, which is named after 12-year-old Colin Coady, featured the rough stock events, as well as a silent auction and a New Year’s Eve Dance. All proceeds from the event will fund the Colin Coady Memorial Scholarship Fund. More than $2,500.00 was raised for the fund this year. Congratulations to Earl and J.D. on hosting such a touching and successful event. We will be looking forward to it again next year.

Mike and Mary Ann Mallory took advantage of the horribly dry weather last weekend to brand their calves at their place. It’s a pretty sad sight to see when you have a dusty corral in January. We sure hope it starts raining soon, very soon! Some of those helping out at Mike’s place included: Allen Wallace, Steve, Brooke and Mason Rianda, Mike, Brandi and Wade Garza, Lee Whitney, Andy Barrington, John Copsey, Vern and Joann Scattini, J.W., Candace, Emily, Sara and Kate Brewen, John Brewen and Lou Harbin, Larry Homen, Casey Sabin, Mason and Shannon Mallory and me, Todd and the kids. Mike kept a few calves back for the kids to rope again which is always fun to see.

Until next week, pray for lots of rain, and be sure to give me a call or e-mail me with any news you’d like to share at
