Wow, what a change in weather we had down here in South County
last week. It was downright cold a few mornings. Hopefully a sign
of a very wet winter!

The Lonoak Badgers 4-H Club held their monthly meeting last Monday at
Bitterwater Tully School. Rachel Diaz and Katie Donham shared with the group how they did at the San Benito County Fair.
The Home Department held its monthly meeting on Oct. 11 at Bear Valley Hall. Former Bitterwater Tully teacher Ann Williams was the guest speaker. There were 10 women on hand to visit with Ann and reminisce about her teaching days there. The next Home Department meeting is scheduled for Nov. 6 at Bear Valley. This will be the usual potluck lunch but instead of a speaker it will be a cleanup day at the hall instead.
Wear some old clothes, bring some cleaning supplies and a dish to share.
Everyone is welcome and encouraged to attend.
Mike and Annette Shields returned home last week from a great trip.
They left Salinas on Sept. 29 aboard an Amtrak Train headed to Pensacola, Fla., to attend the 40th Anniversary of the first Marine Squadron to enter into Vietnam (can you believe it’s been 40 years?). It took them four days to get to Florida and Mike said the trip was “absolutely delightful.” They took books along to read but never even picked one up as they were so engrossed in the scenery all along the way. He said the scenery was beautiful, the food on the train was fabulous and that the service was great. There were a lot of English and New Zealanders on the train that they became acquainted with. Once they arrived in Pensacola, Hurricane Lilly dampened the party a little bit but not too bad. Mike was able to see people that he hasn’t seen in 35-36 years. Mike did two tours in Vietnam and was reunited with two of his squadrons. They had a wonderful time and after the reunion was over, some friends of theirs from Atlanta flew down to see them for a few days’ visit as well. They boarded the train again early morning on the 9th and arrived back in Salinas late on the 11th. Mike said it was a great trip and encouraged everyone to take a trip on the railroad at least once.
Last Saturday I headed up to Santa Clara to the Pacific International
Quilt Show with the King City Quilt Guild. We chartered a bus that left King
City at 8 a.m. for a full day of fabric shopping and quilt viewing. We were excited to see quilts on display from several local gals. It is quite an honor to have a quilt accepted at this show, as thousands have been entered. Janet Locey of Hollister had two that we saw on display (she may have had more but with the hundreds there, we were only fortunate enough to see the two), Holly Casey of King City had two, one of them won an award for best pieced quilt, and Katie Mackin of King City also had a patriotic quilt on display. After a full day of shopping and getting inspired to come home and quilt, it was back to King City just in time for dinner. Others from South County who enjoyed the day were Cynnie O’Connor, Heike Baumgartner, Kasey Hurley, Sami Jo Johnsen and Jennifer Beach.
Boy was I ever lucky last week; I should have been in Tahoe! After a full day of cleaning and going to the dump, I just about died when I noticed that the diamond in my wedding ring had fallen out. I was devastated knowing that I would probably never see it again. I searched high and low before finally accepting the fact that it was gone. Four days later I was sweeping the kitchen floor when in the dustpan I happened to notice something shiny – lo and behold it was my diamond! I still can’t believe it! I keep checking it to make sure it’s really it and not one of Sierra’s fake jewels! Now its off to the jewelers to get fixed, appraised and added on to my insurance policy in case it ever happens again! Ellen Schwarz’s story is even better than mine though – she lost her diamond when making a pot of pasta, she found her diamond three months later when she defrosted the pasta and was having it for dinner!
If you’re looking for something to do Saturday evening, Bitterwater Tully
School is having its annual Halloween Party at Tully Hall. It begins at 6 p.m. and will include a costume contest (for kids and adults), pie and cake auction and lots of games. Desserts and finger foods will be served. Everyone is invited so come on out and enjoy some good old-fashioned fun.
