Summer is now officially over, now that Labor Day weekend has come and gone. I hope you all had an enjoyable holiday. There were a few birthdays celebrated in South County last week, as well as a few other things going on as well.

David O’Connor celebrated the big 4-0 last Wednesday, August 30th. Cynnie had a nice, home cooked meal (but when doesn’t Cynnie have something good on the stove?) for David and several family members. Those helping David celebrate included: Virginia O’Connor, Robert and Tressy Vanetti, Brysan O’Connor, Kuulei Flores, Kanani, Chase and Clay Barbree and Cynnie, Sami, Shane and Kassie O’Connor.

Also celebrating a birthday last week was Taylor Jo Hurley. Taylor celebrated by having a kids “ranch rodeo” at her home. Besides riding horses all afternoon, the kids also swam in water troughs and played volleyball in the corrals. Those helping Taylor celebrate besides her immediate family included: Jeanine Madson, The McFarland Family, The Barbree Family, The O’Connor Family, The Sans Family, The Brewen Family, The Barrington Family, Sami Jo and Jo Ellen Johnsen, Lynette and Heidi Hurley, Brandi and Wade Garza and Sandy and Kelsey Silva.

The kids and I, along with my parents and my sister, headed up to Oakland one day last week to take in an A’s vs. Red Sox game. We a re big Red Sox fans so the game wasn’t that great for us since we lost (again…). But, it was still fun anyway to see all our favorite players, live and in person. Maybe next year will be our year. We like the A’s too, just not when they’re playing the Red Sox!

Vern and JoAnn Scattini, Wyatt Bourdett, Lacey Taliaferro and John Rianda spent last week in Elko, Nevada for the Elko County Fair. They all competed in the ranch rodeo there. They didn’t have much luck, but they had a good vacation anyway.

Darlene Maggini called me the other day to pass on information about a memorial service that will be held in honor of Sylvia Selleck. The service will take place on Saturday, Sept. 16, 2006 at the Selleck Ranch. The service will begin at 10:30 AM and will be followed by a salad potluck. All those who knew Sylvia are invited and encouraged to attend. For more information, you can contact Linda Selleck or Darlene Maggini.

For those of you out there who have a sweet tooth, the Bitterwater Lady Badgers will be hosting a fundraising bake sale this Friday, September 8th at Bitterwater School at 3:00 PM. If you’ve been to a Bitterwater bake sale before, you know they don’t last long. Usually we are all sold out within 20-30 minutes so if you want something, be sure to get there on time! The fundraiser will help the team pay for uniform expenses, tournament fee’s and equipment fees. Hope to see you there.

The Monterey County Cattlemen’s Association will be hosting its annual roping and ranch rodeo this weekend at the Salinas Valley Fairgrounds in King City. They are also having a reverse draw dinner dance on Saturday night.

Enjoy your week, and, if you have any news you’d like to share, be sure to give me a call or e-mail me at [email protected].
