Anzar High School

Destiny Hansen didn’t start playing basketball until her freshman year. Born and raised in Prunedale, Hansen never really gave the sport a thought because there simply wasn’t a place to play.

There aren’t many quarterbacks who also play defensive end and on kickoff return. But that’s exactly the situation Anzar High senior Dave Conrath found himself in a 60-0 loss to Fresno Christian last week. Even though the Hawks couldn’t stay with one of the best 8-man football teams in the state, they might have found a potent passing combination in Conrath and tight end Andres Cobian.

For the third straight season, the Anzar High football team has started the year with a roster of 30 players or more. That's actually not too shabby for an 8-man football team. The Hawks play their season opener on Saturday at Fresno Christian, and coach Frank Reyes believes he’s got quality talent in those numbers.

At Anzar High School, beneath the shade of a sparkly orange mortarboard with a drawing of Frida Kahlo, San Juan Bautista resident Adeline Martinez prepared to graduate.

Faby Felix beamed with pride as she watched the athletes on the Anzar High track and field team compete in the season-opening North Salinas Time Trials on March 4. Felix, who is also the school’s cross-country coach, was downright ecstatic as she talked about standout Angel Garcia.

As the only two seniors on the Anzar High boys basketball team, Jarret DeAmaral and Josiah Martinez knew they would have to lead a young squad by example.

Before the start of a match against York on Jan. 8, Anzar High senior forward Charlene Tomasini approached teammate Ronnee Davis and asked her if she was ready to play forward. Davis was thinking, ‘Say what?’
